Ending Child Marriage

Child marriage is a human rights violation that robs girls of their rights to health, to live in security, and to choose if, when and whom to marry.

It is a harmful practice, which severely affects the rights of a child and further deprives the child from attaining other aspirations like education.

Every year, about 14 million adolescent and teen girls are married, almost always forced into the arrangement by their parents.

Although the proportion of child brides has generally decreased over the last 30 years, in some regions child marriage remains the order of the day, even among the youngest generations, particularly in rural areas and among the poorest.

Among young women worldwide aged 20-24, around 1 in 3 (or 70 million) was married as children and around 1 in 9 (or 23 million) entered into marriage or union before they reached age 15.

Sadly, the largest numbers of child brides are concentrated in Africa. Child marriage is deeply rooted in gender inequality (gender based violence and gender discrimination), poverty, tradition and culture. The practice is most common in rural areas, where prospects for girls can be limited.

In an effort to provide a bright future for millions of women and girls, the AU together with a range of partners launched the African Union Campaign to End Child Marriage in Africa on 29 May 2014.

Girls and women have the right to live free from violence and discrimination and achieve their potential but they are prevented due to being forced into child marriage.

This harmful practice has devastating effects on the girl-child and the society. One of the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity for girls age 15 to 19 is pregnancy and childbirth because their bodies are not ready.

More awareness needs to be created particularly at the grassroots to highlight the dangers of encouraging child brides.

We all have the responsibility to raise our voices in order to put an end to child marriage.

The First African Girls' Summit On Ending Child Marriage In Africa

The first ever African Girls Summit on ending child marriage in Africa, took place in Lusaka, Zambia on November  26th and 27th.

The Summit organized by the Department of Social Affairs of the African Union Commission (AUC) in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Zambia, held at New
Government Complex Conference Centre, Lusaka, Zambia.

The event aimed mainly at sharing experiences and good practices as well as challenges on ending child marriages at country, regional and international levels, particularly with countries that have already launched the AUC Campaign on ending Girls’ Child Marriage.

Ministers from member States dealing with social development issues and children affairs, Ministers of Finance, Religious and Community Leaders, youth advocates particularly women and girls affected by child marriage; Development Partners, UN Agencies, Bilateral and Multi lateral Agencies and representatives from Civil Society Organisations ( CSOs) all attended the Summit.

Nollywood A-list actress and activist, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde was also present at the event to lend her voice to the noble cause.

Santa Comes To Visit

"Santa Comes To Visit", initiated by Save Our Needy is an annual project aimed at providing relief to the
disadvantaged during the Christmas season and to usher in the New Year celebrations.

We are aware that some people have never had the privilege of enjoying Xmas and the New Year celebrations due to harsh economic conditions.

Disadvantaged children look forlorn and wear long faces looking up to their breadwinner who struggles to make ends meet with little or nothing.  They wish to celebrate like everyone else.

The season, instead of being a season of joy, happiness and beautiful memories becomes a season of tears, sorrow and hopelessness for these unfortunate people.

This is therefore, our little way of positively impacting the lives of such people.

In 2014, Save Our Needy paid surprise visits to 7 disadvantaged families who did not have the financial capacity to celebrate the Yuletide holidays.

This Christmas, we'll be playing Santa to 15 families. Disadvantaged single mothers and widows as well as their children will be getting surprise visits, and gifts of food items, clothing, shoes, toys and toiletries will be donated to them.

We hope to restore joy to their homes  and bring smiles  into their lives this season of giving and sharing.

You can be a part of this either by making material contributions or financial donations.

Happy Universal Children's Day

Today is Universal Children's Day.

The date November 20th marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.

The Convention, which is the most widely ratified international human rights treaty, sets out a number of children's rights including the right to life, to health, to education and to play, as well as the right to family life, to be protected from violence, to not be discriminated, and to have their views heard.

Let's Join Hands To END Poverty NOW!

2015 is the year of ACTION. #action2015

Ensuring that leaders take ambitious decisions to reduce poverty and inequality and, protect our planet this year is everyone’s responsibility.

Climate change affects all countries today but Africa is one of the most vulnerable continents to climate change and climate vulnerability. Climate change is a serious threat to efforts at poverty eradication, and sustainable development in Africa particularly in Nigeria because the country has large rural population directly depending on climate sensitive economic and development sectors (agriculture and fisheries). As a result of harsh weather conditions, diseases including tuberculosis have been on the increase. It is time to address this important issue.

Climate change is everyone's business.

We Stand With Girls Everywhere

Yesterday, October 11, was the International Day of The Girl. The UN's theme for this year is “The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030. The theme highlights the importance of girls to achieving the global goals for sustainable development. Simply put: In order to attain the Global Goals by 2030, we have to reach girls.

The International Day of The Girl gives us the opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary power of girls to change the world if educated and empowered.

We cannot claim to be living in an advanced world if 62 million girls are still out of school and 15 million girls a year are married before 18. This must change!

Here are a few reasons why we should all stand with girls everywhere and rise up for girls' rights:

  • Every girl no matter where she comes from or lives, has the right to go to school, stay safe from violence, access health services, and fully participate in her community.
  • Empowered girls mean healthier families. When girls are educated, healthy, and empowered, families are healthier.
  • Empowered girls are key to breaking the cycle of poverty for families around the world.
  • Empowered girls strengthen economies. According to a new Brookings report, “Increasing the number of women completing secondary education by just 1 percent could increase a country’s economic growth by 0.3 percent.”
  • An empowered girl is 10 times more likely to know her right and protect herself from HIV/AIDS.
  • Every girl has the right to be in charge of her future and her fate.

We have the collective obligation to protect girls' rights and promote their well-being. Let's join hands to unlock the potential of girls particularly in Africa.

Are you still hesitating? It is time to take action! Every girl deserves to fulfill her dreams.
